Display fridges with built-in vs. remote refrigeration unit: which should you choose for your store?

Author: Echipa Modaco

What is a display fridge refrigeration unit and why does the choice matter?

When purchasing a display fridge for a shop, restaurant, or HoReCa establishment, one of the most important technical considerations is the type of refrigeration unit — the heart of the system that maintains the optimum temperature. The choice between a built-in (monobloc) unit and a remote (remote condenser) unit directly affects running costs, comfort in the sales area, and the service life of the equipment.

Display fridges with a built-in refrigeration unit

Display fridges with a built-in refrigeration unit have the cooling assembly integrated directly into the cabinet body. This is the most widespread solution in small and medium-sized shops, thanks to its ease of installation and flexibility in placement.

Advantages

  • Quick and simple installation — no additional refrigeration work is required; the display fridge plugs straight into a power outlet.
  • Lower upfront costs — no remote unit, refrigeration pipework, or specialist labour for connection is needed.
  • Mobility — the equipment can be moved relatively easily if you reorganise the sales area.
  • Suitable for small spaces or a limited number of units — ideal for neighbourhood shops, butcher shops, deli counters, or HoReCa establishments with moderate floor areas.

Disadvantages

  • Heat discharged into the sales area — the compressor and condenser release heat directly into the room, which can raise the ambient temperature, especially in summer.
  • Higher noise level — the compressor operates in close proximity to customers and staff.
  • Slightly lower energy efficiency under high ambient-temperature conditions.

Display fridges with a remote refrigeration unit

In display fridges with a remote refrigeration unit, the condensing unit is installed outside the sales area — typically on the roof, at the rear of the store, or in a plant room. This is the preferred solution for supermarkets, large-format stores, or store chains.

Advantages

  • Superior thermal and acoustic comfort — heat and noise are removed entirely from the customer area.
  • Better energy efficiency — the unit operates under optimum temperature conditions, reducing long-term energy consumption.
  • Ability to connect multiple display fridges to a single unit — a cost-effective solution for stores with extensive refrigeration requirements.
  • Longer service life for components, owing to more stable operating conditions.

Disadvantages

  • Higher upfront costs — refrigeration installation work, pipework, and qualified labour are required.
  • Reduced flexibility when repositioning display fridges — any relocation involves modifying the installation.
  • Requires dedicated plant space for housing the remote refrigeration unit.

What temperatures and features should you consider?

Regardless of the unit type, the working temperature must match the products on display. Ventilated display fridges for fresh meat have an adjustable temperature range of 0 to +8 °C; for storing fresh meat under optimum food-safety conditions, the temperature is set to 0/+2 °C. Display fridges for cold cuts, dairy products, and prepared foods are generally set between +2 and +6 °C.

It is important to note that humidity control is a feature specific to meat-ageing display fridges — it is not found on standard display fridges for fresh meat or cold cuts.
