Water Leaks in Display Fridges – Common Causes and Practical Solutions

Author: Echipa Modaco

Why Is My Display Fridge Leaking Water?

Water leaks in display fridges are one of the most frequently reported problems by owners of food retail stores, supermarkets, and HoReCa establishments. Beyond the unsightly appearance and slip hazard they create, these leaks can indicate technical faults that, if left unaddressed, lead to equipment damage and costly repairs. Understanding the causes is the first step towards resolving the issue quickly and effectively.

Main Causes of Water Leaks

1. Blocked or Clogged Drain Pipe

This is, by far, the most common cause. Condensation formed inside the display fridge is collected and removed through a drainage system. If this pipe becomes blocked with food residue, dust, or mould, water can no longer drain away and begins to accumulate, eventually ending up on the floor. Regular inspection and cleaning of the drainage system is essential for the correct operation of any commercial display fridge.

2. Worn or Damaged Door Seals

Door seals ensure the thermal insulation of the display fridge. When they age, crack, or deform, warm air from outside enters the cabinet, causing excess condensation. The result is a build-up of water on the interior walls and, eventually, visible leaks. Faulty seals also increase electricity consumption, as the compressor is forced to work harder to maintain the set temperature.

3. Defrost System Malfunction

Modern display fridges are equipped with automatic defrost cycles. If the defrost heater or its associated thermostat fails, ice accumulates excessively on the evaporator. When it melts in an uncontrolled manner, the volume of water exceeds the capacity of the drainage system, resulting in heavy leaks. This situation requires the intervention of a qualified technician.

4. Incorrect Levelling of the Unit

A display fridge that is not perfectly level cannot drain condensation water correctly. Even a slight tilt can cause water to flow towards the wrong areas and spill onto the floor. Checking the levelling with a spirit level is a simple operation, but one that is often overlooked.

5. High Ambient Temperature or Excessive Humidity

In commercial spaces with high indoor temperatures or relative humidity above 60–65%, display fridges produce significantly more condensation than under normal conditions. Proper ventilation of the sales floor or professional kitchen significantly reduces this phenomenon.

How to Fix Water Leaks – Practical Solutions

  • Clean the drainage system monthly, using warm water and, if necessary, a mild disinfectant solution. Make sure the drain outlet is not obstructed.
  • Inspect the door seals quarterly. If you notice they are soft, deformed, or that the door does not close with an airtight seal, replace them as soon as possible.
  • Check the levelling of the unit every time it is moved, and periodically in any case, especially on floors that may warp over time.
  • Do not overload the display fridge with products that obstruct cold air circulation. Excess stock prevents uniform cooling and encourages ice formation.
  • Ensure proper ventilation of the commercial space, especially in summer when the temperature difference between inside and outside is at its greatest.
  • Contact an authorised service centre as soon as you notice ice build-up on the evaporator or a fault in the defrost cycle.

When Should You Call a Specialist?

There are situations where the intervention of a qualified technician is the only correct solution: compressor faults, refrigerant issues, control panel errors, or structural damage to the unit. Any attempt at improvised repair can worsen the problem and void the equipment warranty.
