Why Your Display Fridge Is Not Cooling – Common Causes and Quick Checks

Display fridge not cooling – a problem you should not ignore

If you have noticed that the display fridge in your shop or restaurant is no longer maintaining the correct temperature, it is important to act quickly. A display fridge that does not cool properly can lead to spoiled products, significant financial losses and even sanctions from health authorities. Before calling a technician, there are a few simple checks you can carry out yourself to identify the source of the problem.

Common reasons why a display fridge stops cooling

1. The condenser is dirty or blocked

The condenser is the component that dissipates heat from the refrigeration system. If it is covered with dust, grease or other deposits, cooling efficiency drops considerably. In display fridges installed in high-traffic areas or restaurant kitchens, the condenser can become clogged relatively quickly.

What you can do: Check the condenser grille regularly and clean it with a soft brush or compressed air. This simple operation can resolve the problem in many cases.

2. The doors are not sealing properly

The rubber gaskets on the display fridge doors keep cold air inside. Over time they wear out, deform or crack, allowing warm air from outside to enter the cabinet.

What you can do: Visually inspect the gaskets along their entire length. If you notice damaged sections or can feel cold air escaping around the door, the gaskets need to be replaced. This is a relatively straightforward and affordable repair.

3. The refrigerant level is low

Loss of refrigerant is one of the most common causes of poor cooling. It usually occurs due to micro-cracks in the refrigeration circuit. Typical signs include uneven ice formation on the evaporator or a complete absence of frost.

What you can do: This issue requires the intervention of a qualified technician. Do not attempt to add refrigerant yourself, as incorrect handling can worsen the fault and presents safety risks.

4. The compressor is malfunctioning

The compressor is the heart of any refrigeration system. If it starts and stops frequently, makes unusual noises or does not start at all, it may be partially or completely faulty.

What you can do: Listen carefully to the sounds the display fridge produces. A healthy compressor makes a steady, even noise. Any sudden change in sound or excessive vibration is a sign that a service team should be called.

5. The evaporator fans are blocked or faulty

The fans ensure the circulation of cold air inside the display fridge. If they are blocked by ice or have simply failed, temperature distribution becomes uneven and overall cooling performance drops.

What you can do: Check whether you can hear the fans running when the display fridge is in operation. Also make sure that the products on display are not obstructing the internal airflow.

Quick checks to carry out before calling a service engineer

  • Check that the display fridge is correctly connected to the mains and that the fuse or circuit breaker has not tripped.
  • Check the thermostat settings – the temperature may have been changed accidentally.
  • Make sure the display fridge is not positioned in direct sunlight or next to a heat source (oven, boiler, radiator).
  • Check whether there is excessive ice build-up on the evaporator – if so, the unit needs manual defrosting.
  • Confirm that there is sufficient space around the condenser for ventilation (at least 10–15 cm from walls).

Why the quality of refrigeration equipment matters

Many of the problems described above occur less frequently with high-quality refrigeration equipment designed and built with reliable components. Modaco display fridges, manufactured in Romania since 1992, are engineered to meet the demanding requirements of food retailers, supermarkets and HoReCa establishments. Robust construction, high-quality components and an energy-efficient design contribute to a long service life with minimal maintenance.

Whether you need a display fridge for dairy products, cold cuts, beverages or pastry items, the Modaco range offers solutions tailored to every type of commercial operation.

When to call a specialist

If your display fridge is still not cooling correctly after the basic checks, do not delay calling a service engineer. The earlier the problem is identified, the simpler and less costly the repair will be. Ignoring faults can lead to damage to the compressor or other essential components, resulting in significantly higher repair costs.
