How to Save Energy with Modern Display Fridges

Author: Echipa Modaco

Why does the energy consumption of display fridges matter?

For any food store owner, supermarket, or HoReCa establishment, display fridges are among the largest consumers of electrical energy. Studies show that refrigeration equipment can account for between 30% and 50% of a commercial space's total energy consumption. This is precisely why choosing modern, efficient display fridges — and adopting correct operating practices — can make the difference between an enormous electricity bill and significant long-term savings.

Choose refrigeration equipment with a high energy rating

The first step towards energy efficiency is purchasing energy-certified display fridges. Modern display fridges are equipped with high-efficiency compressors, optimised cooling systems, and high-performance thermal insulation, which considerably reduce energy consumption compared to older models.

MODACO display fridges, manufactured in Romania since 1992, are designed to meet European energy efficiency standards. Whether we are talking about refrigerated display fridges for cold cuts and dairy, pastry display fridges, or HoReCa equipment, every model is built with careful attention to energy consumption, without compromising the maintenance of optimal product temperatures.

Practical tips for reducing energy consumption

1. Ensure adequate ventilation around the equipment

One of the most common mistakes is placing display fridges in confined spaces without sufficient air circulation. The compressor needs space to dissipate heat. If heat accumulates around the equipment, the compressor will work harder and consume more energy. Always observe the minimum clearances recommended by the manufacturer.

2. Check and replace door seals

Worn or damaged seals allow cold air to escape and warm air to enter the interior of the display fridge. This forces the compressor to run continuously in order to maintain the set temperature. Inspect seals regularly and replace them as soon as you notice any signs of deterioration.

3. Defrost refrigeration equipment regularly

Ice build-up on the evaporator reduces the thermal efficiency of the display fridge and increases energy consumption. Modern display fridges, including MODACO models, are equipped with automatic defrost systems, but it is important to periodically check that these are functioning correctly and to ensure that internal air circulation is not obstructed.

4. Set the correct temperature for each product category

Colder does not necessarily mean better. Each product category has an optimal storage temperature:

  • Cold cuts and dairy: between 2°C and 4°C
  • Soft drinks: between 4°C and 8°C
  • Pastry products: between 2°C and 6°C
  • Frozen products: minimum -18°C

Setting the temperature a few degrees lower than necessary can increase energy consumption by up to 10–15% with no real benefit for the products.

5. Do not overload the display fridge

An overcrowded space obstructs the circulation of cold air inside the display fridge. Air must circulate freely in order to maintain a uniform temperature. Arrange products so that there is space between them, and never exceed the maximum load line indicated by the manufacturer.

6. Clean the condenser and air filter regularly

Dust and dirt accumulated on the condenser reduce cooling efficiency and force the compressor to consume more energy. Monthly cleaning of the condenser and air filters can reduce energy consumption by up to 5–10%.

The investment in modernisation pays for itself quickly

Replacing old display fridges with modern models may seem like a significant expense at first, but the return on investment is typically achieved within 2–4 years through savings on energy bills. In addition to reducing operating costs, new display fridges provide a more attractive product presentation and comply with current sanitary and environmental regulations.

MODACO offers customers a complete range of display fridges and commercial refrigeration equipment, suited to both food stores and HoReCa establishments. With over 30 years of experience in the Romanian market, MODACO delivers durable, energy-efficient solutions tailored to each customer's needs.
