How to Reduce Freezer Energy Consumption in Summer: A Practical Guide for Retail and HoReCa

Author: Echipa Modaco

Why Does Freezer Energy Consumption Increase in Summer?

During summer, freezers and chest freezers in shops, restaurants, and HoReCa establishments work significantly harder than in the cold season. High ambient temperatures, frequently opened doors, and increased humidity force compressors to start more often and run for longer periods in order to maintain the set temperature. The result is immediately visible on the electricity bill. The good news is that there are several concrete, easy-to-apply measures that can reduce energy consumption without compromising food safety.

Correct Placement of Refrigeration Equipment

One of the simplest and most effective things you can do is check where your freezers and chest freezers are positioned. The basic rules are straightforward:

  • Keep equipment away from direct sunlight. A freezer exposed to direct sunlight can consume up to 30% more electricity.
  • Maintain distance from heat sources – ovens, fryers, radiators, or air conditioning units blowing warm air.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation space at the back and sides of the unit, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. A blocked or cramped condenser dissipates heat poorly and forces the compressor to work harder.
  • Choose a well-ventilated area, preferably air-conditioned, especially in HoReCa settings where kitchen temperatures can exceed 35 °C.

Preventive Maintenance – The Key to Energy Efficiency

A well-maintained unit consumes considerably less energy. Here is what should be checked regularly, especially before and during summer:

  • Cleaning the condenser. Dust and grease accumulated on the condenser grilles are among the main causes of excess energy consumption. Clean the condenser at least once every two months, and more frequently in dusty environments.
  • Checking the door seals. A worn or deformed seal allows cold air to escape and warm air to continuously enter. A simple test: try pulling a sheet of paper through the closed door – if it slides out easily, the seal needs to be replaced.
  • Periodic defrosting. The layer of ice that forms on the evaporator acts as a thermal insulator and reduces heat exchange efficiency. Follow the defrost cycles recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Checking the set temperature. Do not set the freezer to temperatures lower than necessary. For standard frozen products, –18 °C is sufficient. Every unnecessary degree below that means additional energy consumption.

User Behaviour – A Major Impact on Energy Consumption

The human factor is often underestimated. A few simple habits can make a real difference:

  • Limit the time the door or lid remains open. In summer, with high humidity, warm air entering the unit quickly forms ice and overworks the compressor.
  • Do not place warm or unconditioned products in the freezer. Allow food to reach room temperature (or better yet, pre-refrigerate it) before placing it inside.
  • Organise products logically, so that staff do not stand with the door open searching for items. Clear labels and orderly arrangement reduce access times.
  • Avoid overloading the unit. Internal air circulation is essential for uniform and efficient cooling.

Choose Energy-Efficient Equipment

If your equipment is old, summer is when the difference compared to a modern unit becomes most apparent. The freezers and chest freezers in the Modaco range are selected for high energy efficiency and reliability under intensive operating conditions typical of retail and HoReCa. Modaco imports and distributes a complete range of commercial refrigeration equipment – freezers, chest freezers, upright display fridges, refrigerated prep tables, and refrigerated cabinets – suitable for both food retail shops and restaurants, hotels, and catering establishments.

In addition to in-stock equipment available with fast delivery within 24–48 hours, Modaco can source specific equipment to order, with a delivery lead time of 15–25 working days. Shipping costs are calculated and displayed at checkout. If you prefer to collect the equipment in person, you can do so from the warehouse in Găești, Strada Libertății 15, by prior appointment.

Air Conditioning the Space – An Investment That Pays Off Quickly

A climate-controlled commercial space is not a luxury, but an investment with a direct return in terms of refrigeration equipment energy consumption. If the temperature in your shop or kitchen drops by 5–8 °C compared to the outside, your freezers and display fridges will work less, wear more slowly, and consume less electricity. Do the calculation and you will find that a suitably sized air conditioning unit pays for itself within a few seasons.

Prepare Your Equipment for Summer Now

Do not wait for problems to arise in the middle of the summer season. Check the condition of your freezers, clean the condensers, test the door seals, and assess whether your current equipment still meets the demands of your business. If you need a new freezer, an additional chest freezer, or any other commercial refrigeration equipment, Modaco is at your disposal with expert advice and a personalised quote.
