Climate Classes for Display Fridges – What They Mean and Why They Matter

Author: Echipa Modaco

What Climate Classes Are and Why You Should Know About Them

When choosing a display fridge for your shop or restaurant, you look at dimensions, price, and appearance. But there is one technical parameter that many people overlook — and it can make the difference between equipment that runs flawlessly and equipment that struggles every day to maintain temperature: the climate class.

The climate class indicates the ambient temperature range and relative humidity level under which a refrigeration unit is designed to operate optimally. In other words, it tells you the environmental conditions under which your display fridge can guarantee the performance it was built for.

The Standard Classification – From SN to T

According to European standards, commercial refrigeration equipment is grouped into four main climate classes:

  • SN (Subnormal) – ambient temperature between +10 °C and +32 °C. Suitable for cool spaces, warehouses, or shops that are unheated in winter.
  • N (Normal) – ambient temperature between +16 °C and +32 °C. The most common class for shops and commercial spaces in Romania.
  • ST (Subtropical) – ambient temperature between +16 °C and +38 °C. Recommended for poorly air-conditioned spaces or south-facing premises with high heat exposure.
  • T (Tropical) – ambient temperature between +16 °C and +43 °C. Required in areas with very hot summers or in spaces without air conditioning during the summer season.

Many modern display fridges are certified for combined classes — for example SN-T — making them versatile across a wide range of conditions.

Why the Wrong Climate Class Can Damage Your Products

If you install a class N display fridge in a space that reaches 36–38 °C in summer, the compressor will run under overload trying to maintain the set temperature. The consequences are direct:

  • the temperature inside the display fridge rises above the food safety limit;
  • electricity consumption increases significantly;
  • the compressor wears out prematurely, and servicing costs skyrocket;
  • products — especially fresh meat, dairy, and cold cuts — can be compromised.

On the other hand, an ST or T display fridge installed in a cool warehouse in winter may experience problems with condensation and operation at temperatures too low for its design parameters.

How to Choose the Right Climate Class for Your Space

The straightforward answer: measure the maximum temperature in your commercial space during the hottest months and choose a display fridge certified for that range. Also take into account:

  • sun exposure — a display fridge near a west-facing window can receive considerable additional heat in the afternoon;
  • your air-conditioning system — if you have an efficient air-conditioning system that keeps the temperature below 32 °C, class N may be sufficient;
  • the type of products on display — fresh meat requires temperatures between 0 and +2 °C, which puts greater demand on the refrigeration unit in warm conditions.

Temperature, Humidity, and Specialist Products

One important point to clarify: humidity control is not a standard feature of ordinary display fridges. This function is specific to meat-ageing display cabinets, where controlled humidity is essential to the ageing process.

By contrast, ventilated display fridges for fresh meat feature an adjustable temperature range of 0 to +8 °C. For displaying fresh meat, the temperature is set to 0/+2 °C, in line with food safety regulations.

Modaco Display Fridges and Adapting to Conditions in Romania

At Modaco, refrigeration equipment is selected and recommended with the real conditions of Romanian commercial spaces in mind. The horizontal display fridges for cold cuts, dairy, and vacuum-packed meat from the VF1000, VF1000D, and VFX1000 series, manufactured in our own workshop in Găești, are also available to order in custom dimensions — with a lead time of 15–25 working days.

Products available in stock can be dispatched quickly, within 24–48 hours. Shipping costs are displayed at checkout. Orders can also be collected directly from the warehouse in Găești (Strada Libertății 15) by prior appointment.

If you need a vertical display fridge, a fresh-meat display fridge, or a freezer with a specific climate class, the Modaco team can guide you towards the right choice based on the particular characteristics of your space.

Conclusion – Don't Leave the Climate Class to Chance

The climate class is not a technical detail to be ignored. It is one of the criteria that determines whether your display fridge will operate efficiently for years to come or become a source of costs and problems. Spend a few minutes checking the conditions in your space and seek expert advice before making a purchase.
