The energy rating is one of the most important criteria when selecting commercial refrigeration equipment, with a direct impact on long-term operating costs. Understanding this indicator helps you make informed purchasing decisions and optimise your electricity expenses.

The energy rating system

Commercial refrigeration equipment is rated on a scale from A+++ (most efficient) to G (least efficient). Since 2021, the new EU energy label uses a scale from A to G, and equipment from previous generations rated A+, A++ or A+++ has been reclassified under the new methodology.

How consumption is calculated

The annual energy consumption of a refrigeration unit is expressed in kWh/year and is measured under standardised laboratory conditions (ambient temperature 25°C, relative humidity 60%). Real-world consumption can vary depending on: the ambient temperature in the retail premises, how often the doors are opened, how heavily the unit is loaded and the quality of the building's thermal insulation.

The financial impact

A display fridge with an A+++ energy rating can consume 30-50% less than a B- or C-rated unit of similar capacity. At an average electricity price of 1.2 lei/kWh and a consumption difference of 500 kWh/year, the annual saving is 600 lei. The additional investment in a higher energy rating pays for itself in 3-5 years.

Factors that influence real-world efficiency

Beyond the declared energy rating, real-world efficiency is influenced by: the quality of the thermal insulation (the thickness and type of insulating material), the type and efficiency of the compressor (Inverter compressors are more efficient), the defrost system (reverse-cycle defrosting is more efficient than electric defrosting), and the set temperature (each degree Celsius above the necessary minimum reduces consumption by ~3-5%).

Recommendations for choosing

For equipment that runs 18-24 hours a day (the typical scenario in food retail), investing in a higher energy rating is always economically justified in the medium and long term. Calculate the total cost of ownership (TCO), not just the purchase price.
